The Mission

The Beauty for Ashes Contemporary School of Dance (BFASD) is a repertory dance theater company and school that build bridges of understanding through the presentation and celebration of choreographic works by artists, focusing on under-served communities while also addressing the broader public. As an independent non-profit organization the mission is twofold.

As a performing arts organization, Riddick Dance under the auspices of BEAUTY FOR ASHES CONTEMPORARY SCHOOL OF DANCE aims to present and help create a broad dance repertory so as to enrich the range of cultural offerings of the Hampton Roads region. BEAUTY FOR ASHES CONTEMPORARY SCHOOL OF DANCE facilitates artistic collaborations, including but not limited to performances, workshops, seminars and community projects, thereby fostering grassroots involvement and increasing a general awareness of the performing arts in the Hampton Roads region and beyond. Through these efforts, new channels of creative dialog between dynamic cultural expressions including, but not limited to, dance, music, poetry, visual arts, and performance media, are established while existing avenues of creative dialog and cooperation can be broadened.

Under these guidelines, Riddick Dance under the auspices BEAUTY FOR ASHES CONTEMPORARY SCHOOL OF DANCE offers performance opportunities to artists and dancers so they can share their work with a broad range of audiences, furnishes design and rehearsal space for both new and established choreographers and dancers, and provides administrative and technical support to choreographers and other performance organizations.

The educational component of BEAUTY FOR ASHES CONTEMPORARY SCHOOL OF DANCE addresses primarily under-served communities of the Hampton Roads, VA, and region. Special attention is given to the needs and goals of younger members of these communities, providing them with the tools of discipline, respect, integrity, creativity and a focused work attitude, regardless of economic or social background. This emphasis is understood as vital to the health and well-being of the community at large.

Beauty for Ashes Contemporary School of Dance

We are re-launching our new organizational name from Beauty for Ashes Dance & Theatre to Riddick Dance to serve the community of Hampton Roads. For five years, the Beauty for Ashes Contemporary School of Dance (BFACSD) has been enthralling audiences here in the Hampton Roads Area. In Beauty for Ashes Contemporary School of Dance (BFACSD), our professional teachers offer high caliber dance training to talented young students, many of whom receive scholarships. Our innovative Arts in Education programs inspire children of Hampton Roads in need of uplifting experiences. Every time a class is taught and the curtain goes up, I am reminded of everybody, that I am writing today to invite you to share the spirit of Beauty for Ashes Contemporary School of Dance (BFACSD) and Riddick Dance by joining our family of friends. 

Riddick Dance

Based in the City of Hampton, Virginia, artistic director, David F. Riddick, founded in 2009 under the auspices of Beauty for Ashes Contemporary School of Dance and Riddick Dance (formally known as Beauty for Ashes Dance & Theater, Inc.)  Riddick Dance aims to present and help create a broad dance repertory company so as to enrich the range of cultural offerings of the Hampton Roads region. Artistic-Executive Director

David Riddick, (Artistic Director/Choreographer of Riddick Dance) a native of Newport News, Virginia, is the founder and Artistic Executive Director. He has trained extensively under Valeria Sinyavskya from Russia who was the pupil of Agrippina Vaganova. David is a teacher in the following areas of dance techniques such as Vaganova (Ballet), Graham, Horton, African, Jazz, Hip Hop and Liturgical.  His passion is to train, instruct and inspire those with aspirations to become professional dancers and choreographers. While working at Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center of Newport News, Virginia. Mr. Riddick was an Assistant Program Director managing the departments dance, theater, music and arts.
